Grady College alumna Maxine Clark, founder and chief executive bear of Build-A-Bear Workshop, will visit Grady College next Monday as the inaugural W. Ronald Lane Executive-in-Residence in Advertising.

The advertising executive-in-residence in advertising program was “created to provide the opportunity for the department the means to invite professionals to spend time with students and faculty,” said Karen King, professor and head of Grady’s Department of Advertising and Public Relations.

The position was named in honor of retired professor of advertising and former interim department head Ron Lane because he was a “long-time faculty member with a commitment to keeping Grady faculty and students connected to the industry with the industry and because of his contributions . “It’s very appropriate that Maxine Clark was named the first executive-in-residence because she was was one of a student of Ron Lane’s students,” King said. “We are thrilled that she is coming to share her expertise with our students.”

Clark (ABJ ’71) has been chief executive bear of Build-A-Bear Workshop, Inc. since the company’s inception in 1997 and has served as chairman of its board of directors since April 2000. From November 1992 until January 1996, Clark was the president of Payless ShoeSource, Inc. In 2008 Clark was named one of The 25 Most Influential People in Retailing by Chain Store Age; in 2006 she was inducted into the Junior Achievement National Business Hall of Fame and received the 2006 Luminary Award for Entrepreneurial Achievement from the Committee of 200. She was named a Customer-Centered Leader in the 2005 Customer First Awards by Fast Company.

Forty-eight students across the country were nominated as the best, most deserving individuals from their AAF student chapters. Therefore, to be selected to receive one of these 15 positions is impressive. He will be working with The Group in Dallas. Congratulations Chris!

spring break brain cramp

There was a lull in activity in the department over spring break and thus a lack of new postings. The blog-master suffered from a brain cramp during this time and actually forgot the password to the blog. Never fear though! The brain is now functioning again as the password resufaced in her memory. There are many new posts to add, so I will begin.

Digital Week

Last week was a big week for digital media in the Grady AdPR Department.

It started on Monday with a great guest speaker sponsored by the AEF, Tom Lynch. Named by Advertising Age as a "Digital Player", Lynch is the vice president of strategy and account planning at Avenue A/Razorfish in Atlanta. He spoke in three advertising classes and held an open forum with students and faculty. He was terrific!

On Thursday, several of the AdPR faculty participated in the workshop on blogging taught by Kaye Sweetser. Thanks Kaye!

Karen Russell traveled to Washington D.C. to participate in a panel on PR and Social Media on Friday. This was a Grady Alumni function hosted by Porter Novelli. I hear that she dazzled them! Check out the talk online at:

The week ended with the Edelman Digital Boot Camp for PR students and faculty. You can see from the previous post that this was a big success.

Edelman Digital Boot Camp

The Boot Digital Boot Camp got rave reviews today! I was able to attend the session lead by Edelman VP & social media guru Phil Gomes. As promised, he talked about the big picture and what he sees happening in practice. It inspired this Ad Dog to start this blog for the department. Congrats to Kaye Sweetser and her class and Karen Russell and her class for their efforts in pulling this together.
