Hearst Visiting Professional in Residence

Grady Grad Rebbeca Leet (ABJ '71) was at Grady this week as a HearstFoundation Visiting Professional.

"Leet is currently principal of Rebecca Leet & Associates, providing strategic management and strategic communications services to such clients as the Ford Foundation, the American Red Cross, Deloitte Tax LLP, The World Bank, Pew Center for Civic Journalism and others.

After graduating from UGA and working briefly in Switzerland, Leet returned to the Washington, D.C. area, where she had grown up. She has remained there throughout her career, weaving in and out of the national news media, politics, non-profit management and consulting.

Leet began her career at The Washington Star, the former afternoon paper in Washington, D.C., where she worked her way up from obit writer to a reporter covering the U.S. Congress before departing in 1977 to become national press secretary for Republican Senator Lowell Weicker of Connecticut, who was exploring a run for President.

She departed Weicker's staff to become vice president for communications of The Wilderness Society, where she helped shift communications in the environmental movement away from a publicity focus to a strategic communications/lobbying focus. After three years there, she became director of news information for ABC News in Washington. Along the way, she served briefly as interim anchor for a local PBS show entitled Metro Week in Review.

With blood more geared to ink than broadcast, Leet left ABC News and established her own consulting practice in 1983, operating it until 2008 when she took a year off to become executive director of the Public Leadership Education Network (PLEN), the only national organization solely focused on preparing women for leadership in the public sector.

As a consultant, Leet also speaks and writes about nonprofit management and marketing issues and, in 2007, published the first book in the sector on message development, Message Matters: Succeeding at the Crossroads of Mission and Market. She is also credited with crafting the American Lung Association's longtime slogan: When you can't breathe, nothing else matters.

Over the course of her career, Leet has served on numerous national and local nonprofit boards of directors, including the public broadcasting station in Washington, WETA, and was the founding president of two local nonprofits. She is a former member of the George Foster Peabody Awards Board and, in 2008, was inducted into the Grady College Fellowship. She won the Public Relations Society of America's Silver Anvil for work she did as part of a team promoting the U.S. Census. She lives in Arlington, Va.

During her three-day Grady visit, Leet visited several public relations and advertising classes, met with students one-on-one, delivered an open talk in the Drewry Room, held a message development session with faculty and staff, and participated in PRSSA's PRofessional CONNECTION conference.

The Hearst Visiting Professionals program is designed to provide Grady College students and faculty with executive communication leadership based on real-world experience and perspectives. The careers of selected executives span across majors and interests in journalism and mass communication." (Courtesy of Dr. Sherrie Whaley as found on: www.grady.uga.edu)

2009 PRofessional Connection a Success!

The fifth annual PRofessional Connection conference,, held on November 11th, offered an opportunity for public relations students to learn from and interact with industry professionals. Professional participants included recent grads and more seasoned professionals. With concurrent sessions, the only challenge was to decide which great sessions to attend!

Featured Speaker at the dinner was Grady Grad, Swann Sieler, Manageer, Community Relations & Corporate Support, Southern Company. She discussed the challenges of managing the brand of football's most famous dog--Uga.

Congratulations to the PRSSA Executive Board and Dr. Betty Jones for putting on such a great conference and especially to event organizers, Erica Holland and Debbie Ebalobo.
Special thanks to Southern Company who's sponsorhip made this event possible.

Grad Students Attend Turner Research Program

Ten Grady graduate students interested in media research and five Grady faculty members attended "Ratings and Cents," a program developed for the group by Grady Grad Jason Boyd. The program gave the participants a snapshot of the various media research activities going on at Turner on a daily basis.
After a welcome from Jason (Project Manager, Strategic Research and Audience Analysis), an overview of the program was provided by Nancy Lucas, Corporate Vice President, Strategy & Marketing Research.

The rest of the morning was spent with several Turner research teams as they presented the case for a fictional new cable network. The group discussed all of the research that would go into launching such a network. The example was so realistic, that it had us all wondering whether or not the proposed network was real or just a fictional brand as we were told. Presenters included: Felicia Hamilton, Sr. Director-CNN Audience and Marketing Research; Greg Gajus, VP-Entertainment Programming Research; Katie Larkin, Sr. VP, Entertainment & Sports Ad Sales Research & Strategy; Tom Cattapan, Director, Digital Research & Analytics; and Jocelyn McDowell, Sr. Director, Digital and Marketing Research for Turner Entertainment & Turner Sports.

After lunch, Grady attendees toured CNN Studios and the CCLC Focus Research Facility. We were also treated to a panel discussion titled, "How Research Shapes Our Strategic Thinking," moderated by Jason Boyd. Panelists included: Scot Safon, Executive VP/Chief Marketing Officer-CNN Worldwide; Jeff Carr, VP President of Programming-TBS; and Mallom Liggon, Marketing Manager-Turner Sports.

The day was fun, informative and our hosts were extraordinarily gracious. Thank you Jason!

Twenty-two members of UGA’s Ad Club headed north to Chicago recently. From October 24th to October 28th, the students and their faculty escort, advertising lecturer Dr. Jennifer Griffith, participated in the Chicago advertising agency tour, visiting six different agencies in their travels. Explains advertising major Thomas Pulliam, “The trip was a chance to explore the Second City of advertising, visit some of the best known ad and media agencies, and view the world from 14, 500 feet up atop the Willis Tower.”

And view the world they did! Over the weekend, the travelers had a terrific time exploring the Windy City and enjoying Chicago’s famous deep-dish pizza, taking in some theater and live music, sailing Lake Michigan and the river on the architectural boat tour, and strolling and shopping the Magnificent Mile.

Monday and Tuesday, the group set out for the agencies; this year they made stops at Novus Media/OMD, Draft FCB, Rise Interactive, Starcom, Leo Burnett, and Laughlin Constable.
“My favorite part of going on agency tours, whether it is in Atlanta or Chicago, is seeing the inner workings of the agencies,” says Chelsea Gattung, a senior in the advertising major, “Every agency has a different feel, the interaction between coworkers is different, and the type of work they produce differs between larger and smaller agencies.”
Ad Club first visited Chicago in 2007, and the Chicago advertising agency tour now alternates with the New York trip, so they’ll journey back to the Big Apple in fall of 2010. For now, though, it seems that the trip to Chicago has given some advertising students new and interesting ideas about their futures. Graduating senior and ad major Wilson Long had this to say: "The Chicago tour revealed that there are countless opportunities existing outside of both NYC and the southeast. If I could manage to brave the winters in the Windy City, I would love the opportunity to work for an agency in Chicago."

In her introduction of Dr. Jones, Karen King quoted Russell Teaching Award winner (and Teaching Academy member) Dr. Acosta-Alzuru, "Betty is the most important person in the building for the majority of our public relations students. She excels as a teacher, mentor and role model….and she never quits improving her teaching technique.”
Other Teaching Fellows in the Department include Dr. Dean Krugman and Dr. Lynne Sallot.

Halloween at Grady

Halloween brought some little (and very cute) members of the ADPR family to Grady. Trick-or-treaters were treated to goodies while faculty and staff were treated to some amazing costumed guests. We had cheerleaders, fairy princesses, Frankenstein, Victorian princesses, Dorothy and even a Grady Gator.
