Much thanks to Dr. Jennifer Griffith who taught the campaigns course, and to other faculty and graduate students who coached student teams.

AdPR Intern Spotlight: Francesca Pefianco

Francesca Pefianco is an Advertising major. She interned at Mediacom this summer.

What is Mediacom?
Mediacom is one of the world's leading media agencies. I am working at Mediacom's New York City office which handles media planning and media buying for many established clients including Audi, Subway, Dell, Revlon and Volkswagen.

What are your responsibilities this summer at Mediacom?
This summer I was placed on the Subway Restaurant team in the Communications Planning Department. I participated with my team in all of the brand strategy and media planning components for Subway, including creating the entire Upfront Plan for the 4th Quarter.

What valuable information or skills have you learned thus far at your internship?
I got to play a hand in all aspects of media planning, including brainstorming, analyzing data, making flowcharts and creating media plans. I also received hands-on training in several media software programs, including MRI+, Stradegy, and Xpert. I was able to attend several client meetings and be exposed to the true corporate agency atmosphere.

Has anything you learned in your Advertising classes aided you in your internship this summer?
Several things I learned in my Media Planning class proved to be extremely valuable in my internship. Knowing the media lingo and basic formulas helped keep me up to speed with the team in my office when many other interns had to start from square one.

What has been the best part about living in New York City?
Living in New York is amazing. Everything you need is at your fingertips, and there is always something fun to do!

AdPR New Alum Spotlight: Lauren Locher

Lauren Locher (ABJ 2011)
Lauren Locher graduated from UGA in May 2011, with degrees in Public Relations and Spanish and a Certificate in Personal and Organizational Leadership. She is currently living and working in Athens, GA.

What are your plans after graduation?
I am working as an Account Executive for See.Spark.Go, an Athens-based Public Relations agency that serves clients all over the nation. We work with clients such as Chick-fil-A Leadercast, Nike, Mutual of Omaha's Aha Moment Tour and Boosterthon Fun Run. I love being able to tell stories for such great companies and interact directly with our clients. It has been incredible to be so hands-on in the day-to-day activities at See.Spark.Go, and I am looking forward to seeing what else is in store.

What are your long-term career goals?
My ultimate goal is to work in corporate marketing and public relations or to be an event planner. As for right now, I am loving being able to explore countless companies and organizations through agency life. It's been really rewarding to have the opportunity to do multiple things, ultimately preparing me for wherever my life takes me.

What do you wish you had known when you entered Grady College that could have enhanced your experience there?
I wish I had known more about the New Media Certificate and how beneficial it is. Social media, web development and everything related to new media is so important right now in the public relations, marketing, and advertising worlds. I absolutely wish I would have been part of the program to learn crucial skills. So many companies are looking to hire people specifically for those positions, and I would have absolutely loved to be in the New Media classes.

AdPR Intern Spotlight: Shandrea Evans

This summer, Advertising major Shandrea Evans is interning at Archer>Malmo.

What is Archer>Malmo?
Founded in 1952, Archer>Malmo is the largest full-service agency in the Mid South. With its core service in advertising and digital, there are also five other brands or branches within the agency that specialize in other areas of communications. These branches include Archer>Malmo Public Relations, Lifesize Interactive, Tangerine Direct Marketing, Smash Experiential Marketing, and TMB Marketing. With successful projects for clients including Elvis Presley Enterprises, Verizon, AutoZone, and Kraft Food Ingredients, there are many reasons why this mid-sized agency can live up to its reputation as the best in its region.

What are your responsibilities at Archer>Malmo this summer?
I am an intern in the client services department of Archer>Malmo. This branch is known as account management in advertising. I am responsible for helping to determine and execute the needs of the clients. This is achieved through various means such as market research, conducting competitive analyses, preparing strategy and product briefs, and working with creative departments to execute projects.

What valuable information or skills have you learned thus far at your internship?
So far, I have learned the process of how to edit and produce a final copy of a fashion catalog. I have also learned how to create and present a competitive analysis for a client so that they will better understand the business environment at hand, how our services have benefitted them, and what we must do to move forward and remain in the top percentage of market share. One of the most important things I have learned is the structure and dynamics of an advertising agency and how each of the departments works cohesively to gain and keep new business.

How has the knowledge you gained from your Advertising classes aided you in your internship?
Yes, in particular my marketing and advertising research classes, alone with my media planning class. The interns at Archer>Malmo have been assigned a project of new business that we must present at the culmination of the summer. Starting from scratch, it was imperative that we begin with market research and analysis. Luckily, I had just taken marketing and advertising research, so I knew the proper way to begin as well as how to use different research databases the agency employed. After we had determined our target market, we needed to verify the best methods to reach our audience. This is where media planning came in handy. I was able to use MRI among other databases to discover which media outlets would be most efficient. Grady has definitely prepared me in the classroom for real world applications outside of the classroom.

AdPR Senior Spotlight: Gerald Isaac

Gerald Isaac (ABJ 2011)
Advertising major Gerald Issac recently graduated from UGA. He also earned a degree in Marketing.

What are your plans after graduation?
I have no definite plans yet, but I hope to move to New York, Chicago, or Los Angeles and work for a larger advertising firm. I hope to focus on strategy, branding or account management.

What are your long-term career goals?
I have always had an interest in entertainment advertising/marketing, so I hope to find my way into that realm. Honestly I am just looking forward to learning as much as I can, seeing the world, and figuring out my passions.

What do you wish you had known when you entered Grady college so that you could have made the most of your experience?
There are two things as journalism majors I think are extremely important: writing and graphics skills. Most people believe they are much better writers than they really are, myself included, and I would have liked to have exposed myself to more writing classes. Writing is such a crucial skill that is so often forgotten. If you can do it well, you will be way ahead of the game. Graphic skills are becoming more important and relevant as the digital world takes over. Take the Graphic Communications classes if you can, pay attention and continue to practice what you learn so that down the line, you still have that ability in your back pocket.
